Extremely old and rare Fang Ngil Sorcerer-hunting mask, Gabon, the elongated and almost abstract nigl mask was danced to sniff out sorcerers in the village and was very much feared - so much so that it was banned by the colonial authorities in Gabon in 1919 because of the excessive brutality encouraged by the maskers during these rituals. It is very rare to find one of this age, which, in spite of its weathered condition and some loss above the eyes, still conveys the other worldly power it embodies. Provenance: Christensen Fund # CC40241, then private collection Southern Highlands.
