A hand painted Steele & wood tile by Lucien Besche after William Bougureau, evening Mood, stamped verso 'Steele & Wood. Stoke on Trent.', tile size 25 cm high and 14.5 cm wide note: Lucien Besche was a French artist, who moved to England in 1871 and begin working for well known porcelain manufacturer Minton, after a short period at Minton, Besche moved onto to W. T Copeland from 1872-1885, working as a freelance artist. in 1885, he moved to London to develop his craft, not only in paintwork but also drawing for magazines and illustrations for opera costumes. Besche is mostly known for his figurative work, and was featured at the following exhibitions: 1873 Universal Exhibition, Vienna & Royal Academy of arts from 1883-1885. Besche died in 1901 after a successful artistic career.
