Thursday Island and North Queensland: A photograph album, circa 1895 with images by Gilbert A. Smith, Alfred Atkinson and others. Contemporary, oblong folio (350 x 470 mm) half maroon morocco over red cloth boards, with ornamental gilt borders, upper board lettered in gilt 'Thursday Island', spine with raised bands and gilt ornamentation, front paste-down with label of 'Baker & Rouse, Photographic Importers, 46 Queen St., Brisbane', containing 43 albumen print photographs in various sizes, most with pencilled captions on the mount or in the negative, several loosley inserted. Mixed condition. A rare visual record of the tropical far north at the close of the 19th century, significant, in particular, for its documentation of life and commercial activity on Thursday Island and adjacent islands in the Torres Strait.
