Bishop-Osborne, John (1851-1934), Silver Miners near Zeehan, northwest Tasmania, circa 1891-94, Silver albumen print photograph, cabinet card format, 110 x 160 mm, verso with photographer's wet stamp. A Hobart photographer, Bishop-Osborne was based at Zeehan between 1891 and 1894. Large deposits of silver-lead ore had been discovered in the area in 1882 and by 1893, 14,000 tonnes were being mined each year. Zeehan's population peaked at around 10,000 shortly before World War I, the town's current population is less than 1000. A superb composition, with very sharp detail.
