Hewitt, Charles, (Maritime) Joseph and Mary Ann Jewell, survivors of the shipwreck of the General Grant, circa 1868, Albumen print photograph carte-de-visite, 102 x 61 mm, with imprint of C.Hewitt, Photographer, Australasian Studio, Swanston Street, Melbourne. The American merchant ship, the General Grant, was wrecked on the Auckland Islands in May 1866, while en route for London from Melbourne. A small group of survivors remained castaway until November 1867, when they were rescued by a passing whaler.
