Notice to the Public - War Emergency Mails for Australia, December 1854 notice, 51 x 29 cm, on VR watermarked paper, issued by the British Postmaster General, London, advising of the planned sailing on January 5th of the sailing vessel 'Lightning' 'for the conveyance of the Mails..round the Cape of Good Hope...(with) Letters and Newspapers for New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Van Diemen's Land. The notice explains that several of the steam vessels used by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Comapny, having been 'required by Her Majesty's Government for the exigiencies of the {Crimean) War they are unable to provide a Steamer for the conveyance (of mails) from Singapore to Australia, hence the use of the just launched clipper, 'Lightning'.
