Setting out from Mullewa, north of Geraldton, in July, 1896, and heading north-east then north to the Fitzroy River, the exploring party traversed some 3000 kilometres of almost waterless desert before two of their number went missing. Four relief expeditions were mounted but it was Wells himself who finally found their bodies months later.
