A Victorian 9ct gold framed mourning portrait miniature, dedicated to John Edye Manning (1783-1870), unsigned, oval, painted on velum, depicting a young man in a navy jacket and a white shirt with jabot, beneath convex glass, the reverse enclosing a lock of plaited brown hair, within a seed pearl border and a Bristol blue enamel surround, the frame inscribed 'John Edye Manning. B. 1783. D. 1870', housed within a fitted case, 6.3 cm high (image). Provenance. Private Collection, New South Wales. A lawyer by profession, born in Exeter, England, John Edye Manning emigrated to Australia in 1829 to take up a position as registrar for the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and curator of intestate estates on behalf of the colony. Beset by personal and professional financial difficulties, Manning was ultimately removed from his post in 1842, and in 1849 returned to England where he settled in Bristol, until his passing in 1870.
