A good N.Z. colonial Maori subject photo album, with many images by Josiah Martin, mainly larger vintage black and white photographs within a vintage album, each inscribed by hand in black ink beneath the image including 'Tangi-Over the Dead, Rotoiti', 'Deserted by all his Like - Left Alone to Die', 'Mohi-Heroic Chief', 'Maori Village - Maketu Pah', 'Rangitatoa. Tohunga - Performing Incantations - Opening of Carved House', 'Mat Weaving', 'Interior of Carved House - Whakarewarewa' etc.; also including photographic prints of engravings and paintings etc. The larger images 14.7 cm x 20.3 cm. The interior front cover printed with original owner's name S.F. Carter, Parnell, 1905'. Album size 25.2 cm x 29.5 cm. Note: Josiah Martin (b.London 1843-1916) came to N.Z. and established the forerunner of a College of Education in Auckland in the 1870s. For health reasons he gave this up and turned to photography in partnership with William Partington who was responsible for a number of Maori portraits taken in the 1880s. Martin is recorded as one of the most important N.Z. photographers
