A Tibetan Newari workmanship gilt copper repousse mandala palace section with traces of red pigment, circa 13-14th century, worked in high relief, depicts a row of joyously dancing musicians in the Nepalese manner above a ribbed border and between vases and flanking a dorje which rests on a lotus above a crescent moon, beneath a band of lozenges which supports a row of swags, the centre of which is in the form of a lotus flower enclosing a bell, flanking the entrance to the 'gate' is a pillar, a kneeling elephant supporting a viyala style lion adjacent, further decorative edges form the outer perimeter, 29 x 20 cm, For similar motifs in a Newari influenced mandala at Shalu monastery see Amy Heller, 'Tibetan Art', pl.72
