Monju-Ha attributed Koto period Yamato Tegai school Katana unsigned suriage to nagasa, attributed by Nbthk to Monju-ha. Forging masame-hada of flowing straight grain mark can be seen in the background of the fine itame-hada. Temper, wide & flowing gunome based on suguha, with nie activity typical of Yamato Tegai school, Separate koshirae, the long tsuka with good quality rayskin & shakudo, gold & silver menuki depicting peonies. the fuchi kashira are Edo period unsigned, iron with shibuichi, silver & gold depicting shells & seaweed, the shakudo & gold tsuba, unsigned, depicting wise man Chokwaro & his magical mule under a pine tree. the legend of the Sennin Chokwaro comes from Chinese folklore, he was said to have a magical mule which he could reduce in size & place in a gourd, releasing it when he needed it for travelling. the theme is so well known in Japanese Art that sometimes only the mule is depicted, usually amongst flowers & plants to indicate it's miniature size. This katana has Nbthk Hoson papers, the Nbthk & Nthk are the two pre-eminent Japanese sword appreciation & authentication associations. Both organisations accept swords at regular authentication & grading meetings called shinasa, where expert panels usually of four or five members examine, judge & grade swords meeting set standards.
