A contemporary Maori carved whalebone kotiate by Guy Tuterangiwheu O'Connor, the traditional double-bladed form with overlapping spikes, parallel sided oval section long handle with carved manaia butt end, paua inset eyes, square notch lashing hole. Housed in a custom made totara lidded box with adzed detail. Note: O'Connor is of Ngati Porou descent and is noted as a leading artist carver. Two printed cards included with one detailed 'this bone is from the jaw of the sperm whale, one of sixty whales stranded on Muriwai Beach, north of Auckland, Labour Weekend 1974'. Length 37.3 cm
