A rare Abelam helmet mask, carved wood with polychrome decoration, two birds on summit, these masks are worn at yam cult ceremonies by an initiated dancer, more commonly these masks were woven from rattan cane, wooden examples are very scarce. Mounted on a custom metal stand. Provenance: Christopher and Anna Thorpe gallery, purchased 2008, accompanying letter, Maprik Region East Sepik Provence Papua New Guinea, height 67 cm
