Description:
Whitefriars Encased glass 'Cello' vase cinnamon colourway, 18.5 cm height Geoffrey Baxter (1922-1995)-Whitefriars glass Geoffrey Baxter was one of the outstanding British glass designers of the post-war period. From 1954 until 1980 he worked for Britain's leading handmade glass manufacturers, Whitefriars glass. When Baxter joined the Company in 1954, sleek Scandinavian modern was all the rage, although influenced by the clean lined purity and elegance of the Scandinavian aesthetic, and was successful in producing designs which could compete with it on the British market. As Chief Designer at Whitefriars, he had more scope than probably any other glass designer in Britain. In 1967, the new textured range was launched. Perhaps the single most important series of designs, which Baxter created. Deep relief, moulded vases, rough surface textures, which were derived from materials as diverse as tree bark, gouged wood, copper wire and tin racks were considered revolutionary at the time and nothing remotely like them had been seen before in Britain. Below is list of years colourways were introduced: 1965-Willow, Indigo, Cinnamon 1969-Kingfisher blue, Tangerine 1970-Meadow green 1972-pewter, Aubergine 1974-lilac, sage
