Description:
An early 20th century coloured enamelled large silver crucifix on chain engraved 'Rev D.C. Bates, the crucifix with blue, white, red and green detail, engraved and dated to the reverse 22 May 1938, on silver plate long decorative linked chain. Crucifix length 80. Note: Rev. Daniel Cross Bates (1868-1954) was a noted clergyman and meteorologist, ordained at Newcastle in 1892 before coming to New Zealand in 1898; during 1902 Bates served with the 9th New Zealand Contingent in the Boer War attaining the rank of Chaplain-Colonel; due to illness he retired from the church in 1903. In the same year he joined the staff of the Colonial Museum relieving the Director, Augustus Hamilton of the large amount of climatological work which was at that time a museum responsibility. He became director of the Meteorological Office in 190.9 cm
