Diary of John Stevenson Henry C.E, 1805-1895 Journal of a five month voyage from Ireland to port Phillip in the sailing ship 'Asia', 1851. Handwritten in a bound notebook (23 x 18.5 cm.), 42pp, double sided with tipped in newspaper clippings and letters. Pasted to the inside front cover is a albumen carte-de-visite photograph of J.S. Henry, together with a family tree dating back to 1733. John Henry was the first appointed civil Engineer to the Colony of Victoria, in 1851. He was born in Ireland and began his engineering apprenticeship at the age of twenty-four. Appointed civil Engineer to Augustus Frederick, Duke of Leinster in 1839 he sailed with his wife and seven children on the 'Asia' in 1851. His wife and a child died en-route to the colonies, after his arrival in Victoria, he moved to Geelong in 1852. His achievements are recorded in Brownhill's 'Book of History of Geelong & Corio Bay'.
