A group of six Miao embroidered panels, Guizhou, Southern China, mid to late-20th century, the baby carriers of 69 cm and 66 cm long, the square panels of 62 cm and 40 cm long, (6). The two pieces of long panels are excellent examples of a secret technique associated with a group of Miao in a remote valley. Thin strips of a metal alloy are stitched on aprons and back of jackets, predominantly in a hooked geometric pattern. On the fringes and at the bottom of a piece, the alloy is wrapped around a line of warp threads. The ground is decorated with a subtle two-tone embroidery stitch between the metal patterns.
