Gouache on paper, portrait of a seated Maharaja, India, 19th/20th century, dressed in traditional costume & wearing a turban aigrette of pearls, sapphires, emeralds & a central ruby, coordinated with his necklace, bangles, armbands & anklets, placed over his clothes, 69 x 54. Provenance: collection of a former Australian Diplomat. Other Notes: the Maharajas commissioned portraits of themselves wearing their most important jewellery as a symbol of their power & position
