A monumental buff sandstone Buddha head, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, 14th/15th century, with remnants of stucco on the surface, a beatific smile, the heavy eyelids with eyes looking down beneath an arched brow & a raised domed chignon, mounted on black square base, height 60 cm. Provenance: The Barry Smith collection. Other Notes: the Kingdom Ayutthaya, established by King U Thong in1350 to the north of Bangkok was one of the richest & most enduring in south East Asia. This style of head would probably have been placed in a niche on the exterior wall of a temple
