A polished grey stone figure of Vishnu, Nepal, 9th century, modelled standing, with all limbs and attributes still attached such as the current work, are very rare. Physically oriented in an anterior posture, standing in equipoise with weight evenly distributed on both feet, or samabhanga, the current work was designed to be viewed and worshipped from the front, with its sensuous modeling and powerful build, this exceptionally fine work is a superb example of heroic Vishnu sculpture, and a testament to the works produced during the 9th century, mounted on custom made stand, (restoration to nose and lips), 85 cm total height. Provenance: private Australian collection since the 1980s by repute, reference: for similar examples please see the collection at the Patan Museum Nepal & Art of Nepal: Amita ray Published 1973, plate 38 & 39
