A pair of male huia beaks, one with skull fragment. Originating to the 'King Country' region in the Western North Island, c.1800s. Male huia had a heavier, shorter and less curved beak than females. They used their bill to chisel rotting wood, for feeding purposes. Mounted on kauri wood block, with wall mount to reverse. A rare Maori inspired figurative chess set, the rook pieces reference the 1940 Centennial tower constructed in the Art Deco style, suggesting this piece was made some time after the 1940s. Possibly made by Kia ora souvenirs made a large number of novelties commemorating this exhibition. A rare Pataka money box, extant in the original three colour illustrated cardboard box manufactured by UEB Industries, the money box issued by the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne Trustee Bank, Hastings c1960s. A rare survivor, the plastic money box measures 15 cm high, 19 cm wide, 7 cm deep. Box measures 20 cm x 17 cm x 8 cm.
