A.R.D. (Rex) Fairburn (1904-57), Maori rock art motifs, block printed calico fabric with unique overpainted colours, c.1947, signed with the artist's facsimile signature lower right. 42 x 49.5 cm. In 1947, Fairburn was approached by Theo Schoon, the Dutch Indonesian-born artist and photographer, to utilize the tracings Schoon had taken of Maori rock drawings from the limestones caves of the South Island.
