A rare Tasmanian turned circular plaque depicting Aboriginal Native mother and child, c.1880's. The frame is turned blackwood with huon pine backing, with a carved Oregon pine plaque depicting a Tasmanian Aboriginal native woman, with intertwined hair and dressed in animal hides with a small child upon her shoulders. Diameter 26.5 cm. Hobart was a major wood carving centre, due to the ship building industry, and possibly carved after an aboriginal native scrimshaw ships figurehead.
