A magnificent early 18th century greenstone tiki, of truly exceptional size and quality. Carved for a great Maori chief. Stone carved, carver unknown, tribe or iwi unknown. Red wax eyes added sometime after Captain Cook's arrival. One of the great tikis in the world. Only the odd European collector or Museum would have a tiki of equal importance. Flax cloak with double pair twining of muka kaupapa, probably made for a great chief as the size is extremely large being 150 cm in length and 153 cm wide. The warp-whenu, and weft-aho, are worked in double finger pair twining - whatu aho rua. The cloak is adorned with black thrums - hukahuka over the main body - kaupapa.
