1960 Rome Olympics, Bronze Medal awarded to John Konrads for Third place in the 400 metres Freestyle; with bronze metal wreath with name of sport 'Nuoto' (Swimming) designed by Giuseppe Cassioli, minted by Artistice Fiorenti in Florence and in the original green case of presentation. also Diploma: 'Giochi Della XVII Olimpiade, Diploma', awarded to 'John Konrads, Comitato Olimpico Australiano, Medaglia Di Bronzo, 400 M Stile Libero Uomini', with printed signatures of Avery Brundage (Ioc President) & Giulio Andreotti (President of the Organising Committee), framed, overall 52 x 42 cm. At the Olympics in Rome, fellow Australian and defending 400m and 1500m champion, Murray Rose had returned from the United States to compete, and qualifi ed fastest for the 400m fi nal, although well outside Konrads' mark. Konrads held the lead in the fi nal until the halfway mark, when Rose attacked and Konrads deviated from his race plan. Rose went on to win in 4m 18.3s while Konrads was third in 4m 21.8s, well outside his world record of 4m 15.9s. (2 items)
